In 2014

In Turkey, with EGEHAUM (Ege University HIV/AIDS Practice and Research Centre) and Dr Deniz Gökengin, director and IHP partner:

  • Continued the To Prevent and Protect project in Turkey, a response to rapidly rising rates of new HIV infections, in collaboration with key Turkish stakeholders and international allies, to advocate for Turkish government leadership and funding for:

  1. Stigma and self-stigma campaign

  2. Testing – targeted, voluntary, confidential and free, available in a variety of settings

  3. Unified, universal, safe data collection and epidemiologic research to understand Turkey’s HIV reality

  4. New treatment and care centres of excellence in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir

  • Identified key ambassadors to address family foundations and civil society leaders

  • Ongoing dialogue and cooperation with PYD

  • New confidential testing in Şişli initiated by SPoD, a To Prevent and Protect partner

  • Self-management training for people living with HIV with Waverley Care, Scotland:

    • Phase 1 – October 2014: Train 2 HIV+ EGEHAUM trainers at Waverley Care in Edinburgh, Scotland

  • Three issues of HIV Tedavi Bülteni (HIV Treatment Bulletin), with IHP and HIV i-Base, to promote evidence-based treatment and local research

  • Fourth annual Advanced HIV Course for Turkish doctors, with Dr Mike Youle and other UK clinician trainers

In 2015

In Turkey, with EGEHAUM (Ege University HIV/AIDS Practice and Research Centre) and Dr Deniz Gökengin, director and IHP partner

  • Continue To Prevent and Protect project in Turkey, a response to rapidly rising rates of new HIV infections, in collaboration with IHP, key Turkish stakeholders and international allies, to advocate for Turkish government leadership and funding for:

    • Anti stigma and discrimination campaigns

    • Testing – targeted, voluntary, confidential and free, available in a variety of settings

    • Unified, universal, safe data collection and epidemiologic research to understand Turkey’s HIV reality

    • New treatment and care centres of excellence in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir

  • Produce 3 issues of HIV Tedavi Bülteni (HIV Treatment Bulletin)

  • Host 5th annual Advanced HIV Course for Turkish doctors

  • Rapid Appraisal of the HIV Epidemic in Turkey with James Blanchard (U of Manitoba, Canada) and Sevgi Aral, CDC – USA, a project coordinator and team supervisors from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir

  • Site training of doctors newly starting to care for HIV patients

  • Pharmacist advice training

  • Patient follow-up database. More urgent as the numbers grow rapidly.

  • Re-establish EGEHAUM group for people living with HIV

    • Continue Self-Management training, with Waverley Care, Scotland

      • Phase 2 – Commence trainings for people living with HIV, in Izmir with trainers from Waverley Care (Scotland) and EGEHAUM

      • (Phase 3 – In 2016 – Train-the-trainer project for Turkish trainers, with EGEHAUM and Waverley Care)

      • (Phase 4 – In 2016 – Train-the-trainer project for NeLP and Middle East regions trainers with EGEHAUM and Waverley Care)

    • Develop translations project to expand the number of important HIV documents in Turkish

    • Develop a self-stigma project with Nadine Ferris France to include EGEHAUM patients and staff
